ABOUT
Prolific, minimalist, sophisticated and true to their indie rock roots, Spoon has been feeding its ever growing audience a steady diet of post-punk pop that defies labeling, garnering the rank of “top overall artist of the decade” from the review aggregator MetaCritic based partly on the band’s consistently high review scores.
Spoon started out in Austin, Texas in 1993 and set the pattern of their musical future in motion by choosing a name that sounds like mere cutlery but is actually a homage to the 1970s German avant-garde band Can. The band also set the pace for its future endeavors by releasing their debut recording The Nefarious EP just one year later. In 1995 the band released its first full-length LP Telephono in 1996, soon followed by another EP and an album, a single and more albums.
Throughout the ensuing years, Spoon’s ability to tap into the pulse of life has been reflected in their numbers on the Billboard charts along with live appearances on all the top late night talk shows including Saturday Night Live. Their tunes have been featured in the popular TV dramas The O.C., Veronica Mars, Bones, The Simpsons, and Scrubs among others, in the films Cloverfield, 500 Days of Summer,17 Again, and Stranger than Fiction, and even in the video games MLB 09: The Show and Matt Hoffman’s Pro BMX 2.
In 2010 the band released their seventh studio album, Transference, which debuted at #4 on the charts. Almost half of the songs on the album are straight from the original demos, reflecting Spoons’ decision to record without an assist from a seasoned production team for the first time. Guided only by their well seasoned instinct, of all their work to date Transference offers what is probably the truest connection to date between the creative spark of Spoon and their many fans.
