The Love Hope Strength Foundation
The Love Hope Strength Cancer Care Foundation (LHS) in the UK and the USA was co-founded 15 years ago by Mike Peters, frontman of rock band ’The Alarm’, his wife, Jules Peters, and good friend James Chippendale after both Mike and James were diagnosed with leukaemia. Love Hope Strength (LHS) has gone on to raise over $1 million for cancer programs across the globe and has helped save over 4,500 lives by registering people to become potential blood stem cell donors at gigs and music festivals.
This, the first Love Hope Strength World Cancer Day Online Auction, has been set up to raise money to support cancer prevention and cancer care projects for underprivileged communities across the globe. In recent months Love Hope Strength (LHS) has supported the Bone Marrow and Stem Cell transplant team which treats children as well as adults, Jews, Israeli Arabs, Palestinian Arabs and any other patient in need at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Ein Karem Medical Centre. A $20,000 grant has supported a specific project designed to improve life expectancy and quality of life of those who undergo allogeneic stem cell transplantation at the hospital. LHS has also given a $10,000 grant to the Children’s Cancer Unit in Muhimbili National Hospital, Dar Es Salaam to help fund the running costs of the Unit. The Children’s cancer wards and hostel at the hospital are named after LHS – Upendo (Love) and Tumaini (Hope) wards and Ujasiri Hostel (Strength) – because LHS funding helped transform the care that the clinical team were able to provide the children over night. Love Hope Strength has committed to continue to support the incredible care that the team provides in the hospital. LHS has also supported cancer units in the UK and in the US, including the Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where a $5,000 grant has funded new equipment at the hospital’s Proton Therapy Centre.
How the money raised on the Love Hope Strength World Cancer Day Online Auction will make a difference?
The money raised through the Love Hope Strength World Cancer Day Online Auction will help fund: grants to UK and US hospitals caring for people with cancer; the Love Hope Strength Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) Membership Grant scheme, which give cancer organisations in lower income settings the opportunity to participate, access and benefit from the UICC network, offerings and initiatives, which they would not able to be access otherwise; the work of the Children’s Cancer Unit in Muhimbili National Hospital, Tanzania; and cancer prevention projects developed by the World Cancer Research Fund.
Thanks to the generous support of the Beauchamp Family Foundation, every $1 raised through the Love Hope Strength World Cancer Day Online Auction will be matched dollar for dollar.
Mike Peters explains why the Love Hope Strength World Cancer Day Online Auction is so important for him:
“I live with leukaemia and my wife Jules recently underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy following a breast cancer diagnosis. Having received excellent care ourselves, we’ve long been advocates of working to ensure that people in low-to-middle income countries can access better cancer treatment, and we remain committed to this. 70% of cancer deaths occur in low-to-middle income countries. Less than 30% of low-income countries have cancer treatment services available compared to 90% in high-income countries. This has to change”.
“More recently we’ve come to realise how much we can all do to prevent cancer. Cancer is the second-most deadly disease in the world, with 9.6 million people each year dying from some form of cancer. This number is predicted to almost double by 2030, yet at least one third of cancers can be prevented. We recognise that we all need to consider our health and wellbeing more to reduce our own risks of cancer. It’s also clear that much more can be done to prevent cancer globally”.
“We very much believe that cancer isn’t just a critical health issue, it’s a human issue that touches all of us. With the money raised through the auction, we can collectively support some fantastic hospitals and organisations like DKMS, the blood cancer non-profit that LHS has long collaborated with, which we know really need help so people stand a chance of receiving effective treatment when they receive a cancer diagnosis. We can help the World Cancer Research Fund to deliver important cancer prevention initiatives. Through Love Hope Strength’s partnership with UICC, which unites and strengthens the voices of the international cancer community and ensures cancer remains a priority on the global health agenda, the money we raise together will make a real impact. Through its membership service, the UICC gives cancer professionals the best chance of doing a better job tomorrow than they already do today. The money we raise through this auction will really help make change happen at a grassroots level in communities where help is most needed.
